If you are radically changing the color of your walls or applying a much darker color, a second coat is essential, and a third may even be necessary for full coverage. Sun-lit walls may be too hot for the paint to adhere initially, which can affect the final result after the walls are dried. If the wall gives off heat to the touch, wait for it to cool before applying the paint.
Step 1) Apply paint samples to test panels to find the right color
Before finalizing the choice of color for your wall, test the colors you are considering by applying them to test panels. Buy white test panels at a paint store or make them from a drywall, hardboard, or foam panel scrap. Compare the colors chosen under all the light conditions that you will find in the room during a day and an evening. Remove all cover plates from the wall. Screw the screws back into the electrical box to avoid losing them. Remove the dimmer buttons and cover the switches and receptacles with masking tape.
Step 2) Take the furniture out of the room or cover it.
Take all the furniture out of the room or group it in the center of the room. Protect them against splashing with plastic or a protective cloth. Use painter’s blue masking tape to protect any surface that should not be painted, such as doors and window frames. Cover all baseboards with 12-inch baseboard tape, overlapping the protective sheeting on the floor (clean the baseboards before applying the tape to ensure good adhesion).
Step 3) Mix enough paint to complete the project
Pour the contents of all paint containers (for consistency) into a 5-gallon bucket and mix everything together. Prepare the roll and the brush to cut by moistening it with a spray bottle (for latex paint). Remove excess water before applying paint. Start by cutting in a corner using a brush. Cut as far as the reach of your arm to ensure you maintain a wet edge when applying roller paint.
Step 4) Apply the paint going outwards and always start from a wet edge

If the paint on the wall has not dried thoroughly, use quick-release white tape so as not to tear off the paint when you remove the tape. Do not pack the paint on the tape, however, otherwise you will tear off paint at the same time as the tape.
